Where Were You Inauguration Day

Yesterday at noon, my coworkers and I crowded around a TV in the conference room at work to watch Barack Obama's inauguration speech live.  For an hour or so, the office phones were quiet and no one entered through the front door.  The world had paused to watch history.

This was truly one of those "where were you" moments.  Right up there with the assassination of Kennedy, the explosion of the Challenger, and the 9/11 terrorists attacks, years from now we will all remember where we were watching the inauguration of America's first African American president.  President Obama need not accomplish anything else in his presidency.  He has already made history.  He has already made a name for himself and a legacy for his family.

My kids, who daily come home with some new sign or a phrase from a foreign language, yesterday came home with the President's strange name on their tongues.  My five-year old watched the inauguration with his classmates.  Parents, teachers, and kids chattered about the historic event through the school's halls.

Today we get back to life as usual, work as usual for me and politics as usual for Barack Obama.  But wow - what an exciting (and teachable) moment.  So, where were you?

I disagree with the comment that Obama "need not accomplish anything else in his presidency" other than being African-American. I certainly hope he holds himself and this country to a much higher standard than that. I understand the historical significance, but ending there is just not an option.
